Take a shopcation to Kuala Lumpur

Your idea of a perfect vacation? If it is a souped-up shopping spree that you cross borders for, then we hear you. After all you take time out to travel and you take time out to shop – and you do it separately. Why not combine the two and gift yourself the ultimate pleasure of a shopcation?

Imagine yourself, with nothing to do but shop, and why not? More countries are advertising shopping festivals that rain discounts and unbeatable deals so that tourists from far and near converge on their malls with the sole purpose of cleaning the stores out. Malaysia is one of these countries and hosts the 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival every year for your shopping pleasure.

The 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival spans the entire country, but the greatest retail buzz is in and around the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Here is what to expect during the sale, what all to buy, and where to stay if you decide to go on a shopcation to Kuala Lumpur!

The 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival

Sales in conjunction with 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival

The 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival will take over all things shopping from 15 June 2017 to 31 August 2017 throughout Malaysia. If you have a shopping list and are planning a vacation, head to capital city Kuala Lumpur and redo everything starting with your wardrobe and gadgets.

Kuala Lumpur, with its supersized malls and dedicated shopping areas, is a shopping dream destination in ordinary times, so you can well imagine what happens when the 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival takes over! Read on for which areas to hit and what to buy in Kuala Lumpur.

What to buy in Kuala Lumpur

Traditional Malaysian Batik Fabric

Kuala Lumpur shopping lists are typical – any mall crawl in Kuala Lumpur must include visits to electronic stores to upgrade your electronics stash; pewter ware stores and stores that sell Malaysia’s traditional handcrafted batik fabric for that quintessential Malaysian souvenir; and traditional Chinese medicines and herbs if wellness is on your mind.

Foodies can add Malaysian snacks stores to their lists as well. The fashionable lot will find that overhauling their clothes cabinets will not cost too much; in fact, there will be ample budget left over for shoes and handbags too. Once these are taken care of, complete the look by hitting the stores that sell sunglasses and prescription glasses – you will be surprised at the deals!

Tips for shopping in Kuala Lumpur during the 1Malayia Mega Sale Carnival

1. Check prices

2. Be patient and do the rounds before you buy

3. Some plazas have duty free shops; buy from them if you are flying back

4. Keep your airline weight allowance and extra baggage rates in mind when deciding whether or not to buy something on impulse.

Shopping areas in Kuala Lumpur

The list of shopping areas in Kuala Lumpur is exhaustive, but like any shopping Mecca, there are a few key areas. Focus your efforts around the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), Bangsar on the outskirts of KL, and in Petaling Jaya – a satellite city near KL.

Where to go in KLCC

While in KLCC, your first stop should be the Suria KLCC Shopping Complex in Jalan Ampang. Find everything upscale, expensive, and branded at this swanky mall located at the foot of the Petronas Towers. Every international brand has a store at this address, from Louis Vuitton to Gucci and Dior.

You’ll also find top-notch local brands like Farah Khan rubbing shoulders with the international heavyweights; multi label stores like Naquirkee that bring in brands from around the world; a Harrods store; trendy boutiques; jewellers and a number of specialty stores. If you are looking for that souvenir in pewter ware we mentioned earlier, a good, albeit expensive, place to buy it at would be the Royal Selangor store at Suria KLCC. Choose from bar accessories, beer mugs, photo frames, keyrings, and cufflinks.

Across from the mindboggling Suria is a more manageable Avenue K with a huge H&M, a top of the line Leica store, fashion brands like Cotton On, Muji and Midi Shoes, and a host of cafes and restaurants.
